Metal Industries R&D Center introduces offshore wind talent training programs to expand talent pool

With more than 600 offshore wind turbines required to achieve Taiwan’s goal for offshore wind installed capacity to reach 5.7GW by 2025, multinational companies have already set up regional offices or headquarters in Taiwan to build project pipelines while more new comers are waiting to participate in the zonal development auction in the soaring new sector. The influx of foreign investment brings momentum to the market and provides more than 20,000 green job opportunities.

To adapt with growing talent demand, Metal Industries R&D Center (財團法人金屬研究發展中心, hereinafter referred to as MIRDC), under the guidance of Bureau of Energy, MOEA, will begin a series of world-glass offshore wind talent training program at the Kaohsiung Marine Technology Industrial Innovation Zone (高雄海洋科技產業創新專區). MIRDC will work with one of the world’s leading certification body DNV GL to provide the most comprehensive GWO global certification program which offers certification for the Taiwan’s one and only “slinger signaller program”. The instructors have undergone rigorous training in certified institutions in Europe and are capable to teach in both Chinese and in English. The training program can also be customized according to company’s requirement.

MIRDC has established training partnership with several offshore wind developers. For example, in order to adapt to the regulations of fixed local crew members on local vessels, a customized offshore wind crew training program has been provided marine heavy industries.  MIRDC has also design unique programs for offshore wind developer “Vestech Taiwan Corporation and local turbine O&M company “First Energy “, which include onsite learning and turbine maintenance intern programs to help “seed lecturers” and trainees to build up practical experiences, increase professional level and raise safe awareness. Through solid, on site training, the members of the training program will be able to acquire necessary skills and qualities that will prepare them to get on board for the O&M market and boost future marine technology development.

In cooperation with Ministry of Labor, MIRDC aims to speed up the talent training progress by introducing "Offshore Marine Engineering Employment Guidance Program". For anyone who is qualified for this program can apply for full financial support for the program. The program include GWO-BST certification training, offshore wind construction overview and technical terms, a series of industry experts forum and job matching fairs.

MIRDC will be singing training partnership MOUs with leading companies like Hai Long Offshore Wind Program(海龍離岸風電計畫), Taiwan Cogeneration Corp(台汽電) and Taiwan Marine Heavy Industry(TMHI, 台灣海洋重工), providing training opportunities for young talent who wants to become part of offshore wind industry.
